Legend of Battleship Z

or A Study on the Malleability of

Popular History

2015

Battleship Z is a fantastical dramatization of Admiral Zheng He’s voyage in South East Asia. It’s a visual exploration on the malleability in the construct of historical narratives. The use of Zheng He (1371-1433) as a protagonist in a faux-epic provides the premise for interactions between the factual and fictitious, objective and subjective, providing viewers an unreliable material document (the mural) as an inspiration for outlandish yet evidence-based historical narratives.

The elasticity of cultural identity as demonstrated through the author, the stylistic inclination and the reception/reaction of the mural by the general public imply that the trajectory of the acceptable popular history can be manipulated.

Note: Zheng he’s voyage to the Western Ocean (郑和下西洋) is an actual historical document that recorded the early Chinese maritime movement.

Tabula Merah

2015

Tabula Merah is a visual exploration/experiment on the trajectory of Singapore's urbanism. It is an attempt on collectively imagining of our future build environment.

Viewers are encourage to contribute to the mural by drawing directly on the work. The participatory aspect of the mural/installation revisits the reading of Singapore as a Potemkin Metropolis to suggest that even a generic city par excellence has a collective history that can be traced and projected to give urban forms, elusive as it may be. While fantastical in construct, the piece also highlights in honest realism that our built environment, while influenced by architects and planners, are shaped and informed by the denizens that reside in it.
